Diary of Events: Spring 2014



Volunteer sessions are held on Wednesdays and Fridays. We provide drinks but please bring a packed lunch.  If you would like to start volunteering, or just want to come and see what it is all about, please telephone Judith Hughes (01248 670673) or Sarah Edgar (01286 674934).

There will be a small charge for most meetings (£2 for members, £3 for non-members - unless mentioned below), but note that students and children are free.  Children under 16 must be accompanied.

STARWATCH 
Starwatch at Treborth. Bring torch and warm clothes – hot drinks provided. Check beforehand on 01248 353398 if cloudy or wet.

SPRING DINNER AND SOCIAL EVENING 
Enjoy an excellent meal at this popular restaurant. See booking sheet enclosed with the 
Newsletter for further details Places are limited – bookings to Julian Bridges by 1st March. 
Smart casual dress please.

LEN BEER MEMORIAL LECTURE. ‘CHALLENGING CONSERVATION’ BY TREVOR 
DINES 
Trevor is the Conservation Manager for Plantlife Cymru. He studied botany at Bangor 
University and gained a PhD in plant architecture. Trevor undertakes conservation work on 
highly threatened plants such as Sword-leaved Helleborine (woodland), Chamomile 
(heathland), Cornflower (arable) and Lesser Butterfly Orchid (grassland). 
Date: Thursday 20th March 2014 
Time: 7.00 p.m. 
Place: Main Arts Lecture Theatre, College Road, Bangor 
Cost: Donations welcome at the door. 

  
EARLY SPRING PLANT SALE 
Indoor plants, perennials, trees, shrubs, bulbs, ferns, vegetable and salad seedlings. Carnivorous plants. fresh local produce (including a cake stall). Refreshments including tea, coffee and cakes. Contributions welcome as soon as possible, preferably labelled plants. 
Date: Saturday 12th April 2014 
Time: 10.00 a.m to 12.30 p.m. 
Place: Treborth Botanic Garden. No charge 


TEXTILE WORKSHOP 
In conjunction with the Len Beer Lecture we will be hosting Plantlife’s Patchwork Meadow 
Exhibition at Treborth and to celebrate this we will be holding a textile workshop with the 
opportunity to learn basic skills such as knitting and embroidery, or to try something new, eg 
spindle spinning or needle felting. There will be two sessions, morning and afternoon.

Annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs and house plants for sale.

DUNHAM MASSEY AND QUARRY BANK MIL
Visit Dunham Massey Hall and Park (National Trust), and a combination of industry and 
gardening at Quarry Bank Mill (also National Trust).

FUTURE EVENTS 

COACH TRIP TO IRELAND - 8th to 10th July 2014 
We have arranged, jointly with the Welsh Historic Gardens Trust, a three day coach trip to 
gardens in Ireland. We will be staying in Bray, and visiting the National Botanic Gardens of 
Ireland at Glasnevin, and Powerscourt Gardens, as well as three small private gardens – 
the Dillion Garden, Hunting Brook and Tinode. Cost will be £255 with a £36 single room
